How Technology Helps People Discover Culture: BMK Develops an Interactive Solution for the “90 Voices of Maironis” Project

Cultural institutions are increasingly looking for ways to offer visitors not only exhibitions, but also engaging experiences. One of the latest examples is “90 Voices of Maironis”, a project initiated by the Maironis Lithuanian Literature Museum, for which BMK developed an interactive website.

Created to mark the museum’s 90th anniversary, the project brings together 90 museums, libraries, and other cultural and educational institutions across Lithuania into a single interactive literary route. It invites visitors to discover not only the works of Maironis, but also writers from different regions of Lithuania, treasures preserved in museum collections, and fascinating local stories.

Discovering culture through play

Upon arriving at one of the participating institutions, visitors find a stylised Maironis figurine and a QR code. Scanning the code opens a location-specific story on their phone, allowing them to discover a unique story about a writer, learn interesting facts about a museum exhibit, listen to audio recordings of Maironis’ poems from the collection Pavasario balsai (Voices of Spring), and plan their next journeys across Lithuania.

The platform developed by BMK allows users to build a collection of visited locations, plan future routes, and track their progress. Locations are grouped by ethnographic region, while themed routes have been created for those who prefer to travel with a particular focus. A collectible reward system provides additional motivation: after visiting a certain number of locations, participants can receive project prizes. The more project partners they visit, the more discoveries they make and the more opportunities they have to participate in the reward system. This gamified format encourages people not only to engage with literature, but also to travel around Lithuania and explore its museums and libraries.

“When the project was still only an idea, BMK helped us turn it into reality by creating the visual identity, resolving technical challenges, and advising the museum team throughout the entire project. At every stage of the process, we felt that we were working with a professional and responsible team that was always ready to listen, offer guidance, and propose the most suitable solutions. We are extremely pleased with the final result and delighted to present the collections of the Maironis Lithuanian Literature Museum to people across Lithuania in a modern way while meaningfully celebrating our anniversary,” says Benas Drukteinis, Cultural Project Manager at the Maironis Lithuanian Literature Museum.

One platform connecting dozens of cultural institutions

The project brings dozens of museums and libraries together in a single digital route. Each location offers its own unique content, while the user experience remains consistent and easy to navigate. This model enables cultural institutions not only to share their own stories, but also to become part of a broader nationwide initiative that encourages people to travel around Lithuania and discover new places.

Today, cultural institutions must not only preserve heritage, but also find new ways to present it to a wide range of audiences—from schoolchildren and families to travellers. Digital solutions make it possible to do so in a contemporary and engaging way without changing the essence of the cultural content itself.

BMK – technology for cultural experiences

“90 Voices of Maironis” is another cultural digitisation project delivered by BMK in which technology serves as a tool for creating engaging visitor experiences.

When developing digital solutions for museums and other cultural institutions, we aim to make cultural content more accessible and appealing to diverse audiences, while encouraging people to discover Lithuania’s history and heritage in new ways.
